PTSD Treatment in Utah

Compassionate care to help you move forward after trauma.

Experiencing trauma can affect how you feel, think, sleep, and move through everyday life, sometimes long after the event itself has passed. I'm Allison Bonham, APRN, PMHNP-BC, and at Neurvana Psychiatry & Wellness, I provide personalized psychiatric evaluations and medication management for adults experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and related mental health concerns. Through secure telehealth, I help eligible patients throughout Utah better understand their symptoms and explore treatment options that support healing, emotional well-being, and quality of life.

PTSD is often misunderstood. It's not simply having difficulty moving on from a painful experience, and it isn't a sign of weakness. Trauma can affect the way your mind and body respond to stress, sometimes leaving you feeling constantly on edge, disconnected from yourself, or unable to relax even when you're in a safe environment. For some people, symptoms include nightmares, flashbacks, or intrusive memories. For others, they may appear as irritability, emotional numbness, difficulty concentrating, or avoiding situations that bring back painful memories.

What I believe is especially important about treating trauma-related symptoms is creating an environment where you feel safe, respected, and understood. Talking about difficult experiences isn't always easy, and you shouldn't feel pressured to share everything before you're ready. My goal is to listen without judgment, understand how your symptoms are affecting your life, and help you feel comfortable participating in decisions about your care.

PTSD can also occur alongside other mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, and insomnia. These overlapping concerns can affect your mood, energy, relationships, and ability to function each day. Understanding how these symptoms interact is an important part of developing a thoughtful, individualized treatment plan.

At Neurvana, I believe trauma-informed psychiatric care should consider the whole person. We'll look at your symptoms, mental health history, sleep, stress, physical health, and overall well-being. Evidence-based treatments, including trauma-focused psychotherapy and appropriate medication, can help people manage PTSD symptoms and improve daily functioning. My role is to help you understand your options and provide psychiatric care that supports your individual needs.

Healing doesn't follow the same timeline for everyone. My goal is to help you feel heard, supported, and better equipped to move forward at a pace that respects your needs.

What to Expect

Your first appointment is an opportunity for us to have a thoughtful, supportive conversation about what you've been experiencing. We'll discuss your current symptoms, mental health history, sleep, physical health, previous treatments, and how your concerns may be affecting your everyday life.

I understand that discussing trauma can feel uncomfortable or emotionally difficult. You won't be expected to recount every detail of a traumatic experience during your first appointment. We can begin by focusing on your current symptoms, your concerns, and what you hope to achieve through treatment.

A comprehensive evaluation helps us better understand whether your symptoms are consistent with PTSD or whether another mental health condition may be contributing to what you're experiencing. Not everyone who experiences trauma develops PTSD, and an accurate assessment is important for determining the most appropriate care.

If medication is appropriate, we'll discuss the available options, potential benefits, side effects, and what to expect as treatment progresses. Certain antidepressant medications, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), may help reduce PTSD symptoms for some patients.

Medication isn't the only treatment consideration. Trauma-focused psychotherapy is an important evidence-based treatment for PTSD and is generally recommended as a first-line approach. When appropriate, I can recommend specialized therapy and discuss how psychiatric medication management may fit into your overall treatment plan.

Follow-up visits allow us to review your symptoms, sleep, mood, medication response, and overall progress. Treatment may need to change over time, and I believe those decisions should always involve your concerns, preferences, and personal goals.

My goal is to help you feel informed, respected, and supported throughout your care.

Who This Is For

PTSD care at Neurvana may be a good fit if you've experienced a traumatic event and continue to struggle with distressing memories, nightmares, anxiety, emotional numbness, or the feeling that you're constantly on alert.

It may also be appropriate if you've previously received a PTSD diagnosis and are looking for ongoing psychiatric medication management, have tried medication without achieving the results you hoped for, or want a provider who takes time to understand how trauma-related symptoms may be affecting your overall mental health.

Trauma doesn't affect everyone in the same way. Some people experience symptoms after a single event, while others have been affected by repeated or prolonged experiences. You may find that your symptoms interfere with relationships, work, sleep, or everyday activities, even when you're trying your best to manage them.

Whether your symptoms are relatively new or have been affecting your life for years, a psychiatric evaluation can help clarify what you're experiencing and identify appropriate treatment options.

Neurvana provides telehealth psychiatry for eligible adults throughout Utah, allowing appropriate psychiatric evaluations and ongoing medication management from the comfort and privacy of your own space.

Some patients may benefit from specialized trauma-focused therapy, additional evaluation, or a higher level of care. We'll discuss those options when appropriate to help ensure you receive care that fits your individual needs.
