Bipolar Disorder Treatment in Utah
Understanding your moods. Finding balance and stability.
Living with significant changes in mood, energy, or motivation can be confusing and exhausting, especially when you're unsure what's causing them. I'm Allison Bonham, APRN, PMHNP-BC, and at Neurvana Psychiatry & Wellness, I provide personalized psychiatric evaluations and medication management for adults experiencing bipolar disorder and related mood concerns. Through secure telehealth, I help eligible patients throughout Utah better understand their symptoms and explore treatment options that support long-term mental health and stability.
Bipolar disorder is often misunderstood. It's much more than simply having good days and bad days. It involves distinct changes in mood, energy, activity, and sleep that can significantly affect everyday life. Some people experience periods of depression followed by episodes of unusually elevated energy, irritability, or decreased need for sleep. Others may experience less obvious changes that go unrecognized for years.
One of the most important parts of treating bipolar disorder is understanding the full history of someone's symptoms. Some patients initially seek help for depression without realizing that previous periods of increased energy, impulsivity, or reduced need for sleep may be important to their diagnosis. Others may also struggle with anxiety or insomnia, which can complicate the picture. Taking time to understand these patterns helps us make more informed decisions about treatment.
At Neurvana, I believe effective psychiatric care begins with listening and looking at the whole person. We'll explore your mental health history, mood patterns, sleep, physical health, and daily challenges before developing a treatment plan. Medication is often an important part of managing bipolar disorder, but consistent sleep, stress management, supportive routines, and ongoing care can also play meaningful roles in maintaining stability.
My goal is to help you better understand what you're experiencing, feel supported throughout treatment, and develop an approach that fits your individual needs.
How We Help
Comprehensive psychiatric evaluations for bipolar disorder, including bipolar I, bipolar II, and related mood concerns
Careful assessment of mood episodes, including symptoms of depression, mania, and hypomania
Personalized medication management, including mood stabilizers and other appropriate psychiatric medications when clinically indicated
Monitoring medication effectiveness, potential side effects, and treatment response
Attention to overlapping concerns such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, and sleep disturbances
Whole-person strategies that support emotional well-being, including consistent sleep, nutrition, movement, and stress management
Ongoing follow-up appointments to monitor mood stability and make thoughtful treatment adjustments
Coordination with therapists or other healthcare professionals when additional support is beneficial
What to Expect
Your first appointment is an opportunity for us to have a thorough conversation about your mental health history and what you've been experiencing. We'll discuss your moods, energy levels, sleep patterns, previous diagnoses, family history, medications, and how your symptoms may be affecting your relationships, work, and daily responsibilities.
I understand that describing changes in mood can be difficult, especially when symptoms have developed gradually or you've spent years trying to manage them on your own. You don't need to arrive with a clear diagnosis or all the answers. We'll take time to explore your experiences and better understand your symptoms together.
Bipolar disorder can sometimes resemble other mental health conditions, and an accurate diagnosis may require reviewing patterns over time, gathering additional history, or coordinating with other healthcare professionals.
If medication is appropriate, we'll discuss the available options, potential benefits, side effects, and monitoring requirements. Certain medications used for bipolar disorder may require periodic laboratory testing or additional medical monitoring.
Follow-up appointments are particularly important in bipolar disorder treatment. We'll review your mood stability, sleep, medication response, and any concerns that arise. Treatment needs can change over time, and adjustments should be made thoughtfully rather than abruptly stopping or changing medications.
I want you to feel comfortable asking questions, sharing concerns, and actively participating in decisions about your care.

Who This Is For
Bipolar disorder care at Neurvana may be a good fit if you've received a previous bipolar diagnosis and are looking for ongoing psychiatric medication management, or if you've experienced significant changes in mood, energy, sleep, or activity that you would like evaluated.
It may also be appropriate if you've been treated for depression but suspect there may be more to your symptoms, have experienced periods of unusually high energy or reduced need for sleep, or want a provider who takes time to understand your history and develop a personalized treatment plan.
Bipolar disorder can require different levels of care depending on symptom severity. I'll help determine whether outpatient telehealth treatment is appropriate for your individual needs or whether additional in-person evaluation, specialized services, or a higher level of care would be more suitable.
Neurvana provides telehealth psychiatry for eligible adults throughout Utah, allowing appropriate psychiatric evaluations and ongoing medication management from the comfort and privacy of your own space.
If you're experiencing severe mania, psychosis, or symptoms that create immediate safety concerns, urgent in-person evaluation may be necessary. For immediate danger, call 911. For mental health crisis support, call or text 988.
